# Setting the Initial Extent

You can set the project’s **initial extent**, meaning the geographic area displayed by default when the project is opened in a **JMap NG** application or in **Studio**.

**To set the initial extent**:

1. Activate the tool by clicking the ![](https://3291879974-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F9n1KCuTyIKwSpZcPcC6l%2Fuploads%2FDiPfAPhoysXwip9TaRav%2Fstudio-etendue-initiale.png?alt=media\&token=0316b08f-8f3c-4737-9039-cf3e6e3b40ff) icon in the **Define an initial extent** section.
2. Click once to start drawing the rectangle.
3. Draw the desired area, then click again to finish.
4. Click the **confirmation** icon to save the extent.
